WE DID IT AGAIN
Congratulations.... Vijender Kumar ( hope for the gold/silver still is alive) and Sushil Kumar. You have done the country, your parents, your coach, your motivators, the citizens proud. You have shown, that with grit and determination, even if conditions are against you, even if the equipment is not of international standard, even if money does not come easy, even if you belong to a small town....the WILL to DO, paves the way. CONGRATS on doing this on your own. No minister, no government can claim responsibility for this and bask in glory.
(Sushil Kumar, bronze in wrestling, Beijing olympics 2008)
We were always talking of India shining but today we can actually feel it,to a certain extent. The government needs to actually wake up from its slumber and think about providing the deserving sports personnel with a good infrastructure, motivation and financial support. Even the private companies and bollywood sponsers should seriously think beyond cricket. We do have players of international caliber, who can do really well in olympics, commonwealth games and asian games. Some have shown what they are made of and some got left behind for the lack of standard and quality training, finance etc.
(Vijender, assured bronze medal, hopeful of gold/silver).
The Beijing Olympics has created lot of hope, that In next olympics, we could win more and more. we have "tasted" success and yes, it is sweet. We cannot get enough of it. The next olympics are four years from now. If the government gets serious and sets the ball rolling, then sky is also not the limit. Shooting, Wrestling, Weightlifting, Boxing, Table Tennis, Archery, Badminton, Squash, Hockey, Tennis and Athletics are some of the sports, we can really work hard and concentrate to win medals. The government could ask Abhinav Bindra and others to make a plan chart for the next Olympics .
Media also needs to act more responsibly and start covering other sports too. They live, eat, breathe cricket. Think beyond the trp too, act responsible. Abhinav Bindra, Sushil Kumar, Akhil Kumar, Saina Mehwal, Sharath Kamal, Jitendra and many others should get their dues. Telelvision Media should not only cover International Competitions but also National Level, State Level and District Level Competitions in our country. Schools need to get more serious about sports too.
Over two centuries ago Dr.Samuel Johnson made a remarkable statement about politics. That was, ” politics is the last refuge of a scoundrel”. The Indian political system and its own breed of filth it contains lives up to this. Anyways, coming back to what one was talking about, have you noticed how crazy our ministers become when a sport person wins on an international platform? The sudden realisation seems to dawn..." oh!! how crazy we are about sports ". Ministers compete with one another to be the first one or the one to announce the most money, gifts, roads/buildings named after etc. First of all, the money and gifts being given are he tax payer's money that is being given without a prior approval. It just depends on the minister's whim. Why, if i may ask ?
The same set of ministers care two hoots . They have done nothing and will do nothing. What infrastructure or facilities have they built in our country so that sports can be furthered ? How many have reached the top due to the sports ministry picking talent at young age and coaching them and giving them opportunity to be in international stage. Zilch!! Every sports person who has come in the international arena has been due to his sheer hard work. In some places family wealth has helped (aboard to international facilities) and some due to will ,hard work and determination. In fact, if anyone has hindered them it is the sports ministry who play politics at every level.
We are on the verge of a revolution in the field of sports. It only needs guidance and direction.
I really do hope and pray that the politicians be endowed with noble thoughts that will benefit the country and its citizens. But, that seems a distant dream, an impossible task, for the rot is set too deep. Till then, the only thought that come to my not too brilliant a mind is " May these vermins be islolated and dropped to an inaccessible location, that is very likely to be hit by a nat
